Gordon Brown presents Catherine Atkinson
with a £250 cheque for the Child Trust Fund.
The Government has set up the Child Trust
Fund to give £250 to every child born since September 2002.
The parents can invest the money in a savings account for
their child's future. Families on low incomes receive an
extra £250 from the Child Trust Fund. Friends and family
can add to this account as the child grows up, so that at
age 18 when the money can be withdrawn, every young person
in the country will have built up assets to give them a better
start in life.
Catherine says "this is a very important
initiative to give children a better start in life. Thousands
of families in Kensington and Chelsea on low incomes will
benefit from the full £500 investment for their childrens'
future. Like Sure Start and the Working Families' Tax Credit,
this shows Labour's real commitment to reducing child poverty."
